Historiquement, l’indigo est une matière colorante bleue violacée extraite de
feuilles et des tiges de l’indigotier, arbuste des régions chaudes d’Afrique,

de l’Inde. C‘est en effet de ce pays que fut importé l’indigo en Europe dès

pousse dans des zones sèches et donne un bleu appelé « bleu des
savanes », tandis que la seconde, plus répandue en Afrique de l’Ouest,
donne une couleur surnommée « bleu des forêts ». Les feuilles récoltées sur
ces plantes sont utilisées pour préparer la décoction servant de teinture
diluée dans de grandes cuves où l’étoffe sera teinte. Ensuite par un savant
mélange, le tissu est trempé plusieurs semaines pour obtenir une nuance de
